from Ethel Lina White’s short story The Wheel Spins, adapted by Sidney Gilliat & Frank Launder and directed by Alfred Hitchcock

starring Margaret Lockwood & Michael Redgrave In another example of a short story making an excellent film, Hitchcock has brought together the ingredients of mystery, comedy and suspense with masterly ease. When a fellow passenger disappears during a rail journey from Eastern Europe to Britain, Iris (Lockwood) fears she is going mad – or is the elderly lady’s absence part of a fiendish espionage plot?

Like the train they’re aboard, Hitchcock’s movie rattles along without ever losing momentum. A pleasure.
