Young people who enjoy cinema can take part in a film-review competition as part of the From Page To Screen festival taking place in Bridport this week (April 13-17).
Anyone under 18 can review any of the films they see during the event and have their review judged by one of the UK’s leading authors, Jonathan Coe. The winning reviews will be posted on the From Page To Screen website.
Coe, who is curating the five-day festival, said: ‘ We really want young people to take part in the festival and we’re hoping they’ll use this opportunity to go and see some of the brilliant young people’s films being screened throughout the week.’
He added: ‘This is a great opportunity for young writers and budding film-makers to have their say and get their work published in the public domain.’
Polly Gifford, director of Bridport Arts Centre said: ‘From Page To Screen celebrates cinema’s relationship with the written word so how better to get young people involved than to ask them to write about what they see.
‘The internet and social media have changed the art of criticism and it will be interesting to see how young people respond to some of the titles we’ve chosen. There’s a great selection of children’s and animated titles and older kids can review any of the films being shown (as long as they’re PG rated!).’
Young people’s films being shown during the festival include:
• The Pied Piper on Wednesday at 10.30am, Bridport Arts Centre
• The Secret of Kells, Friday April 15 at 11am, Bridport Arts Centre
• Winnie the Pooh, Saturday April 16, 11am, Electric Palace
• How to Train Your Dragon, Saturday April 16, 2pm, Bridport Arts Centre
• Winnie the Pooh, Sunday April 17, 11am, Electric Palace
Review competition rules:
Entrants must be 18 or under and must write about a film they have seen during the festival.
There will be two age categories: 5-12, 13-18yrs.
Reviews should tell us what the reviewer thought about the film and why, in no more than 400 words and should be submitted by email to info@frompagetoscreen.org.uk
Entries must be received no later than April 30, 2011
