Sunday 14 April

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, written and directed by Amy Heckerling. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy.

The idea of rehousing Austen’s novel of manners, class snobbery and ill-advised matchmaking in a Beverly Hills high school, was an inspired one. Writer/director Amy Heckerling pulls off the difficult trick of making Cher, our spoilt and shallow narrator, entirely loveable. With great performances, and a script dense with bubblegum West Coast slang, it’s no wonder that Clueless kickstarted a decade of glorious teen cinema.

Guest speaker: Charlie Lyne who runs the brilliant and irreverent Ultra Culture film blog and is making Beyond Clueless: a documentary that examines the second golden age of teen cinema that started with Clueless (1995) and ended with Mean Girls (2004).
